About

Shadows Get Darker When They Overlap brings together the works of Sydney-based photographers Greg Gilet and Felipe Olivares. Gilet’s practice takes inspiration from the rich existing tradition of street photography. The six images featured in the exhibition are the result of a routine in which the artist found himself ruminating the streets of Sydney’s CBD for a couple of hours every Saturday morning after dropping his son off at his French class, a particular moment that has become, in a way, a form of studio-based practice. Olivares presents a suite of six photographs that highlight the oblique and the peripheral embracing a kind of sensibility probably closer to melancholy, where compositions are shaped by the collision of color and light and where shadows and blurs articulate notions of uncanniness, but also of cultural assimilation and dislocation. Through their collective vision, the exhibition prompts viewers to interrogate the beauty, complexity, and humanity that thrive within the urban landscape. As we journey through their photographs, we are reminded that the streetscapes are not merely passages but rather stages where countless stories unfold.
